Slack keeps switching to Away: causes and fixes

If Slack shows you away while you’re working, one of a handful of things is usually going on.

Common causes

  • No activity for about ten minutes on desktop.
  • The Slack app or tab is in the background, or your computer locked or went to sleep.
  • You, or an earlier session, set yourself to away by hand. Manual away stays until you change it.
  • Your network dropped and Slack couldn’t reach your client.
  • On mobile, you left the app.

Quick fixes

  • Click your profile picture and set yourself as active.
  • Check you haven’t left “Set yourself as away” turned on.
  • Keep the Slack window open and your computer awake while you work.
  • Don’t confuse Away with Do not disturb: pausing notifications doesn’t change presence.

When the computer will be off

No setting on your laptop can keep Slack active while the computer is off. If you still want your status to follow your hours, a cloud service like Stayslit can hold the connection for you.

Questions

Why does Slack say Away when I’m reading?

Slack counts activity in the client. Reading without clicking, scrolling or typing for around ten minutes can look idle to it.

Is Away the same as Do not disturb?

No. Away is presence. Do not disturb pauses notifications and doesn’t change whether you appear active.

Close the laptop. Keep the green dot.

Set it up once in about two minutes and Stayslit takes care of the rest, every working day.
